A Bold New Day Dawns...

Aside from a tiny photo of the back of a tiny, naked head, I haven't posted in like four months. No doubt if you're reading this blog, you care about The Venture Bros.. And if both of those things are true, then you probably have some questions about the upcoming season, and just what the hell we think we're doing over here at the AstroBase. Questions such as...

According to some other blogs and apparently the adultswim website, we're supposed to be premiering in August. I say this because I haven't been told an official date by anyone yet. But August sounds about right.

Yes it does, but don't blame the network. They couldn't get it on much sooner than that if they tried. Why? Because we suck. I know...when we split the season into two halves last year we promised to have the second half on by spring or early summer of this year. But we got a later start on these episodes than we originally intended. Suffice to say neither half of Season 4 has been easy to produce...

In the end, it'll all be worth it. We think you're going to really dig these next eight episodes. We seem to have re-embraced the show's sci-fi/comic book/adventure roots, and as much as it was a struggle to write them, they're a whole lot of fun. Lots more development of Hank and Dean, lots of new characters, and lots of old faces returning both triumphantly and trivially.

Back in November, I wrote that we were working on our script for the season finale. And that was true...we ended up turning it in, just before Christmas, several weeks late. But over the break, Doc and I took another look at it and we weren't 100% happy with it. Despite being a good script (and well-received by the network), we just didn't feel right about ending a 16 episode season with a single half hour episode. Especially not one that, despite cutting a bunch of stuff we loved, we'd over-written to the point that it would have to suffer massive cuts in the editing process...

So we called the network and asked them if they'd give us the time and money to take the script back and turn it into a one-hour special. And they said yes. Which brings us to...

After spending January re-writing the finale script--and February and March designing and storyboarding it--we are currently editing the animatic for what will be a Very Special Venture Bros. Season Finale Hour-Long Extravaganza.

Which is another reason why we won't be premiering until August. And why the finale probably won't air until December. But hey--that's an extra half an hour of Venture-y goodness for your patience, right? What we take away with one hand, we give back with the other...

Meanwhile, we've received rough cuts of the first three episodes of Season 4.5 from our overseas studio so far. The screen-grabbed evidence of which is strewn about this entry. We get a new one every two weeks and then spend about 4-5 days reviewing every frame for mistakes, during which we yell at our monitors and each other and compile a list of retakes to send back.

So yeah, that's where we're at in production right now. What else?

It's probably not news to anyone by now, but we have indeed struck a deal with Bif Bang Pow! to produce a line of Venture Bros. action figures (and bobbleheads). At Toy Fare in February, Bif Bang Pow unveiled several prototypes.

I say again...prototypes. These are not the final figures. Since those photos were released, we've been working closely with Jason Lenzi to get the head sculpts, outfits and proportions just right. We're even contributing to the packaging...

Some of you--most likely those of you born after 1978--will never be happy with our choice to go with a retro "Mego style" design, but Doc and I think it's pretty fucking funny. And what is this whole Venture Bros. business about if not a doomed attempt to re-live our childhoods? So there.

Anyway, I'm told the first wave of figures will hit the streets right around the time of the San Diego Comic Con...so start saving your pennies now. And then, in July, go to the bank and get them changed to $20 bills...because we hate pennies, and we will not accept them.

We were originally going to hold off on producing any DVDs of Season 4 until all 16 episodes were complete and we could release one massive boxed set, but given the massive amount of time between seasonal halves, that's pretty unlikely now. The current plan is to release a standard def DVD of the first 8 episodes sometime between July and October (depending on how quickly we get our acts together to record commentary, dig up special features and design the packaging), and then release both a standard def DVD of the second 8 episodes and a Blu-Ray of the entire 16 episode season in March. But that's all I know right now, so don't ask me any questions about it.

Convention season is many months away, but people are asking us to commit to appearances at both the San Diego Comic Con and Dragon Con. And we've done just that--committed to appearing at both. But again, that's all I know right now, so...

Let me add my appreciation for the update and the screen captures. Great stuff! Always good to have something to look forward to.

Also, digging the update to the look of the blog page. Nice.

I laughed, I cried, I squealed in utter delight

I have to say that I was so happy to see the pictures of those action figures that I gasped out loud and scared the living daylight out of my mother.

I am a late-start Venture fan. I wouldn't have known it existed if it were for my fiance, and I became addicted pretty quick. Brock is by far the most badass cartoon character I've ever seen, and that sentiment was greatly enhanced when I recognized Patrick Warburton's voice. Like everyone else reading this, I can't wait for 4.2 and I've got my fingers crossed for season 5.

I know you guys are busy, and I don't want to take away from the attention you give to VB, but if you get a moment would you mind telling Doc that his fans on DeviantArt miss him sorely? His paintings are spectacular...

Now I want to weep with pure, innocent joy.

Anyone know when Venture full season four will be roughly released in Australia?

'Cause we love Venture too down here...

Anyway Sydney-Siders planning on going to Comic Con? If so look at my journal.

thank you for being the greatest ever and for creating the finest cartoon in the history of mankind. also thank you for keeping your adoring publick updated on progress.

that being said, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD do not release the full 16 exclusively on blu ray. there is just no way im upgrading my entire entertainment center in the next 2 years.

Venture Bros is the Best

I have been a fan from the start. You and Doc write great stuff. Although I am disappointed that I have to wait longer for the second half of seas. 4, I am hoping this will give you guys time to work up some more T-Shirts for another Amazing T-Shirt of the Week funnest promo ever, ever, in the world, ever. Thanks for making me laugh, cry, and sometimes cringe. (in a good way)

I thought someone else would have caught this but...that screenshot of The Monarch at a computer station is a near replica of the computer room in the hatch in Lost. Awesome.

You've come a long way, baby.

Heya Jackson,

Thank you so much for your continued fan-love. It provides nice sustenance for us.

Also, can I just point out exactly how far your backgrounds have come since the beginning. Just the "Monarch's Computer Room" and the "Welcome Back: King Gorilla" are proof of that. I was blown away. Granted I'm sure that the move to HD necessitated that a little, and you guys have always made improvements from season to season, but seriously, this is impressive.

Additionally, I'm pleased to see more of the side characters I liked from previous seasons making return appearances. (Ok, yes, like many other posters I'm super excited to see the return of King Gorilla).

Finally, I wanted to give you kudos (I'm sending a box of chocolate chip ones as soon as I find a good address) for the writing in the first half of season 4. It was all beautifully executed and had some of the best character moments of the series. If nothing else, it's refreshing to watch a series where the characters actually grow and change. The whole episode (whose name sadly eludes me at the moment) where 21 takes the boys and gives them "water torture" developed the characters within the Venture and for lack of a better term Monarch families, and you really see how and why they interact as they do.

You create characters not caricatures (even out of the characters that are supposed to be charicatures) and for that you have my sincere appreciation and admiration.

A Thank You to Astrobase Go.

I would just like to thank Chris and Doc for all the hard work they put in,I wouldn't imagine it's easy to run a tv show (especially one as awesome as the venture brothers)but you do it and still have time for your fans.As lame as it may seem the venture brothers have made a huge impact on my life. They have brought me countless hours of laughter and joy and I appreciate that more than you could ever imagine. You guys fuckin rock and we love you.

Hank in a space suit...

Seriously, can hardly wait.
My birthday is 8-18 and some fresh Venture Bros. on the weekend is exactly the right size and exactly the right color.

How did you know??

-and the Monarch looks more like he's piloting something than in a computer room per se, but it's looking like the LOST Hatch all right.

Dammit this show rocks!

Suggestions for S4 boxset Specials or Easteregg

Please, try to remember to add the 2+ minute of 21's fantasy scene from Season3 finale episode that was cut from the original broadcast (for time I belive was the reason) and had been only available to view via the AdultSwim website (for a brief moment in time.) You forgot to add that super-sweet dreamscape back in for the DVD/Blu-ray Season3 boxset. Again, please, don't let that small but totally excellent piece of work vanish into the Internet Ether.

This is the best news ever......I just hope I can make it till August.

GO TEAM FULCHER!!!!!!!!!!I mean VENTURE!!!!!!!!!!!

I asked this earlier, but apparently it was just after JP stopped answering posts, so I'll ask again to see if others are as interested as I:

Will the final episode become the first 43 minute VB episode, or will it continue the 2-part 21 minute finale tradition laid out by the previous two seasons.

I know you said there would be a special airing, but as we know there are only going to be 8 new episodes, I'd love to know whether thats 7 episodes AND an extended finale, or if it's 6 episodes and 2 episodes of finale aired back-to-back.

Best regards,

The 8th episode is the one that got expanded to a full, single, hour-long, self-contained episode. So...we'll be airing seven regular, half-hour episodes starting in August, then we'll have a little break, followed by the season finale special.

How about a hand puppet Hank in Monarch henching outfit with the Hugo doll goatee that comes off?

Thank you so much for bringing us Venture Bros!!
You and Doc are so dedicated to the show and to your fans. Which means alot.
I can't wait till August (My Birthday month) and look forwar the the one hour season finale.
I'm hoping to maybe attend Dragon Con, but not positive of that happening.
Anyway Love you too!
