The March (or May) of Progress...

Hello again…

A belated "Merry Christmas" to you all, and a preemptive "Happy New Year." Apologies for not offering up a Venture Christmas song this season, but we converted to Mayanism earlier this year, so we no longer believed in Christmas and fully believed the world would end on December 21st. Also, we were super-busy with post-production on The Venture Bros. Season 5, as well as with decorating our giant stone calendar and practicing human head soccer.

So now it's back to post-production. Here's where we currently stand with the season: We've already delivered half of the fully finished episodes to the network, and the rest are in various states of post-production. This week we received the rough cut of the final episode from Korea (which is actually the second half of what will be our premiere episode) so I'm spending the day scouring it for errors and typing up retakes notes. Then tonight I'm headed to a final sound mix session for the 6th episode. We'll finish the picture edit for the 7th episode a day or two into the new year and turn it over to our sound engineer, then move on to editing the 8th episode.

Since we're idiots who decided to write and produce our hour-long premiere episode last, we can't start airing until the last episode is finished. I don't currently know exactly when our premiere date is. I've heard it could be as soon as mid-March or as late as early May, but we're racing to get that premiere special done in time for March.

And now that I've seen all of the episodes in one form or another, I can truthfully say it's going to be a great season. The crew in every department of the production really stepped up their game (and new crew members brought new game)--the show's never looked or sounded better. And as writers, Doc and I hit a really great, confident stride that, I think, combines some of the best qualities of seasons past with a uniquely season 5 freshness. A good mix of new characters and old (some of which haven't been seen in quite a while), high adventure in exotic locations and internal strife on the home front. You will like it!

(Incidentally, the guest voices this season include J.K. Simmons, Larry Murphy, Paget Brewster, John Hodgman, Wyatt Cenac, Tim Meadows, Gillian Jacobs, Bill Hader, and the kicking-ass-on-SNL-this-season Kate McKinnon!)

We're also looking ahead to next season. Doc and I have big plans for season 6 and are champing at the bit to get started writing it. But first we have to write the script for our proposed long-form Venture Bros. special. We've got a pretty epic story planned, involving an epic number of cast members in an epic setting, so it's a pretty epic task ahead of us. The story will bridge seasons 5 & 6, so our mission is to tie up a lot of threads from season 5 (and 4, and 3…) and start a few new ones in the process. The sooner we write that, the sooner we'll write season 6--and the sooner we do all this writing, the sooner we'll be back on the air. My hope, as always, is to tighten that interminable gap between seasons--because I don't like waiting to show you new Venture Bros. any more than you like waiting to see new Venture Bros. So wish us luck…

Anyway, I posted a bunch of season 5 screen grabs on my Tumblr, but here's a few more for you LJ loyalists…

I'm shocked, yet gratified, that you continue to post on LJ; it's really nice to see the longer-form commentary that the other social media networks eschew.

Thanks for the update. I'm very much looking forward to the new season. Like, very very much.

All that up there? It looks... AWESOME. Count me in, sailor!

Oh my god, based on the art alone, I can see why it takes so much time, the wait will definitely be worth it!!! I am so excited!!! The backgrounds look amazing! Thank you for always working so hard, this is exactly why Venture Bros. is my favorite show!

This was a much needed Happy Christmas Hug.

Thanks for the update and for all you hard work!
I am excited (impatient) as always.
Love!

Happy New Year! Thanks for the teasers!

Very excited for Season 5!

Can't wait for the new season! Never seen so much confidence from you in a season before, I imagine the stress dilutes confidence a bit, which means this season is probably going to be the best one yet. I also feel that might come across as a backhanded compliment but I solely base this off of commentary; a less stressed on/off smoking Jackson Publick feels like a rare sighting and is relieving to know it can happen.

Also I'm going to take a stab and say Paget will be the voice of the Outrider's wife. Whatever happens I just hope you guys kept the Bane jokes to a minimum, ha-ha.

Re: Very excited for Season 5!

Thank you for your concern. Indeed, a saner production and a top-notch staff made all the difference this season (though I'm still smoking too much) and I'm much better rested, if still creatively restless by nature.

And no... we're 100% Bane-free this season.

All I can do is be excited and wonder what horrifying concoction is in Doc's glass in that last shot.

The Melody, New Brunswick, NJ

The banner art at The Melody (New Brunswick, NJ) Facebook page is rumored to be an illustration from your hand. https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Melody/41490643128 (https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Melody/41490643128) Is this true? If so, do you by chance have a cleaner version of the art to post? (Though I realize this would have been, I'm guessing 15+ years ago.) I'm sure a few people would love to get their hands on shirts with this artwork again. Good luck with the remaining production of Season 5. Can't wait for the premiere, really appreciate that the Halloween episode moved the story arc forward instead of just being more of a standalone episode.

Re: The Melody, New Brunswick, NJ

It is true... I drew the image in that Melody banner. And it was closer to 18 or 19 years ago. Can't remember if the illustration was originally for a newspaper ad (probably the Livingston Medium) or done specifically for t-shirts, but that's definitely a photo of it on a t-shirt. Not sure if I still have that art... think I might have seen it when cleaning my studio recently. What is your affiliation with The Melody?

Nice looking screen shots. Looking forward to the next season.

BTW, awfully glad that whole Mayan thing worked out in our favor :)

Jackson, I thought you might be interested in seeing this. It's an article that lists five things to watch on TV in 2013. They list The Venture Brothers among the five.

Just me freestyling some ideas

Well at least idea(s) that you may have already have covered but I thought would be cool to mention.
Ahehhem, you guys left molotov and monstroso's "death" still a mystery(there was a river in the scene before the limo dropped_.
-Dr. Henry Killinger is my favorite character for his wisdom and just being so unintentionally funnily smart?
-I'd imagine "david bowie" is still going to be in this episode(no quotations needed if you finally successfully politely kidnapped him).
-I'm kinda awkwardly excited but nervous to find out why Sgt.Hatred has tits..
-In a much later episode it'd be amusing to bring back the old OSI colonel(after being fixed by aliens of course).
Start hinting more towards who hank and dean's mother is unless if I and a lot of other people completely missed it.
-Oh yeah! Should bring up Brock Samson's brother; which was mentioned when Brock and Colonel Gathers first met, and you can create a background of whatever whether they get along or hate each other or they are completely opposite like his bro is some small nerd, ideas are limitless)

Thanks for making new episodes it's not easy but you have a huge loyal following behind you 100% who love your work. I'm leaving for the Air Force in late February I really hope we get a trailer or an episode to come out before that or ya know my email address is right ^^^^ haha.

And as always, "Boyo, You don't know dick!" - Colonel Gathers

Thank you for everything you do!

It's been such an interesting story to follow the venture process in the extras and LJ and such over the years. The struggles on the back side of such a great show is what gives it so much heart. Seeing bits of the Astrobase in to show, and really appreciating that this thing has been Yours and Doc's baby from the get go. More than just a job. The new screen caps look great! I cannot wait to watch and see where the story goes next, Your writing from the Astrobase is brilliant.  Really, just want to say thank you for what you do and for all your hard work! It's a great pleasure to have the Venture Bros. Keep it up! :)

p! :)

Re: Thank you for everything you do!

Couldn't have said it any better, sir!

But...QUIT SMOKING!!! My dad just passed away from esophageal cancer and watching him slowly die was tortuous. The world cannot afford to lose you or Doc to the big C!!!

Did you ever speak personally to Stephan Colbert? Since you both represent the height of comedy for me, I was hoping that his assistant's rather curt attitude regarding his availability didn't actually spill over to the man himself. Regardless, as a fan from season one, I look forward to the new season like a squealing girl waiting to be deflowered by Justin Bieber.

Will there be a moment in the upcoming season as funny as the "Everything?" cut to Robo-Bo? Dare we hope for Robo-Luke?

That I read your LiveJournal. I still have the Astrobase Go T-shirt that you guys sold from here. Unfortunately, when you guys had the other t-shirt sale, it was during the only unemployed period of my life.
These spoilers are the primary reason why I use LiveJournal anymore. Thanks, I certainly love them and the best show on television.

Any chance for the return of Dr. Odinson in season 5? I loved that subtle reference, and I think the whole Thor thing is just ripe for parody.

Is May the 19th. the solid date?
Also Simon is working on a new stop-motion.

Hello, could I ask your advice on something? I know you have no control over the distribution of your show, but do you know to whom or to where two English girls could write in order to maybe get the new Venture into the UK? Even if it was just to make sure that it is released on UK iTunes? If you could point us in the right direction, we'd be your fans for life*.

*Pointless promise as we're already committed life-long fandom, but I hope you grasp my sincerity.

Simon's latest Stop-motion labor of love!

Revisiting Return to Sider-Skull Island

I just watched Return to Spider Skull Island again. In the diner scene with boys and Dr. Orpheus, are the two waitresses canonically Dermot's mom and sister? Or is it just a coincidence?

I really need a new season.

The New Shirt of the week club?

At D*C last year You and Doc were discussing starting the shirt of the week club, and I've had several people ask me about it. Is there any sort update you can give me to pass on?

Do you watch 'An Idiot Abroad'?
Because they sent the guy to Japan, and had him interact with that Asimo robot, and the first thing he said was 'It walks like it s**t itself'.
And I thought of Robo-Bo. And I laughed.
