Super-busy crunch time of the season, which always happens around this time...so not much to say other than "we're working really hard."

Doc and I are presently collaborating on episode 37, which we intend to sandwich in as third or fourth in the airing order, since it introduces a plot line/character arc we've been playing with all season but somehow never got around to writing the genesis of earlier on. We'll only have two left to finish out the season after that--which instills me with a paradoxical combination of emotions: "my, where has the time gone?" and "crap...we're not out of the woods yet...what are we gonna do for a big finale this time?"

Recorded Patrick Warburton for episodes 33, 35 and 36 over the phone today--he in Burbank and me in Brooklyn. I was supposed to go to L.A. this weekend to record him, Urbaniak, Dana Snyder and a couple of other guys, but Urbaniak and the Snyde magically appeared in New York this week so I cancelled the trip and recorded them here. Which worked out nicely because Doc and I are a bit behind in our writing and he's going to DragonCon next weekend (which I'm not). Every day I don't have to waste six hours on a plane, stare at the walls of a Hollywood motel, or walk around like a zombie because I'm exhausted from doing either of those things, counts. Of course, this means I'll have to go out there in September...but I'm trying to book a couple of guest voice actors to make it more fun and keep things interesting. They probably won't mean much to anyone but me, but I'm excited about it. Why can't you just let me enjoy this?!

Speaking of me enjoying myself, I paid my first visit of the season to J.G. Thirlwell's place last night to chat about the score for the first few episodes. I was treated to several earsful of some of the themes he's been working on in anticipation of the hours of music he'll have to create this year, and, needless to say, everything I heard was super-cool.

Other than that, we just finished the animatic for episode 30, the design department is working on episode 36, the storyboard guys are plugging away at episode 35 (check out Stephen De Stefano's blog for a window into that world), and we've just shipped episode 29 to the studio in Korea to be animated.

One more brick in the almost non-existent wall of Venture Bros. merchandising is about to be mortared into place--I just got my 3 free copies of a 2008 Venture Bros. calendar in the mail. So look for those in stores...um...some time...soon-ish?

In non-Venture news, Adult Swim's SuperJail has just gone into production on their first season (wish them luck) and it looks like I'll be doing some voices for that.

As will become habit for the next few months, I bid you a fond farewell-for-now with some images of this season's background paintings...

The Revised Venture Living Room...

The Revised Venture Kitchen...

The Revised Venture Compound Overhead (on an importantly gloomy day)...

We Love You,
JP

P.S. If you're a fan of The Venture Bros.--especially the sad and lonely parts about loss and failure--I highly recommend Joe Meno's The Boy Detective Fails, which I recently re-read, and which is available at finer bookstores everywhere.

...then shake off those blues with an eyewalk through Brandon Bird's portfolio.

I was recently looking for book suggestions - I'll add this one to the always growing list.

The revisions look great. I can't believe how close you guys are to finishing the season. Congratulations.

As a random story for you, last Christmas I made my boyfriend a mix CD of alternative (versions, not necessarily music) Christmas music, and couldn't resist throwing on "Hard Candy Christmas" performed by The Monarch and Henchmen. Now, whenever his kids are in the car, they demand to hear that song, calling it "the sheep song" (they baah along when The Monarch hits high notes, and sing along as best they can). It never fails to bring a smile, so thanks to you and Doc for recording it, haha.

Oh my god, the Venture family's living room is actually my grandmother's basement!

...it all makes sense now!

I'm super-excited for new episodes. Great work!

Yanno, I would tottally love to live in a place with that chique goin on. Even with that bad kitch.

Dude I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the new. I know it will rock, it is just no knowing how hard it will.

You are too cool for stayin on LJ, keep it all old school man!

At this point, the Venture Bros is one of the few, if only reasons I'd watch TV.

Those paintings by the way, are very interesting, to say the least!

You are way too good to us. Thanks for taking the time to update-- it looks beautiful and we appreciate the work you guys put into this.

yay an update. i was super excited when i saw this. good luck on the new season.

and update more!!!!

God, the handprint turkeys on the Venture fridge made me crack up. Nice job, background painting department!

I love the various retro-isms.

P.S., I love you, too!

What I wouldn't give for that much counter space.

Looks like I'll actually have reason to buy a calendar, now. And keep up the great work, guys.

Loving the new revisions.
You guys up there at the Astrobase are super-busy.
Again, I have to say it everytime...you guys do amazing work. ^_^

FINALLY! SOME MERCH! Who doesn't need a calendar?
*grabby hands*

Making plans to make a Venture Season 3 Party. Glad to hear it's coming along well. We fans love you.

Would love to have the gang come to a convention in Toronto. ;)

After the first time that The Boy Detective Fails was mentioned in here, I picked it up from the library.

The entire time I read it was spent mapping the characters to what Venture Brothers characters would play them during a dream sequence/crossover.

Everything matched up pretty well. Not quite eerily well, but enough for a fun pondering.

Joe Meno actually read at my university last semester. I've been meaning to pick that book up... I mean, I will, if you give me the go ahead.

Pardon my ignorance, but is the sound quality good enough to record a voice over the phone in this day and age? It seems kinda odd if you ask me, but if it can be done, then more power to everyone.

Just a random inquiry.

No no...the way it works is he's standing in a real recording studio with a real mic and probably a vegetable plate and some bottled water and I'm just listening in over the phone.

A VB calendar may cause me to give up my yearly Demotivators calendar for 2008. Excellent.

(Now how about some action figures? I could use a Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend on my desk.)

That first picture with Jonas Sr. got me all excited! Can't wait to see his story unfold!

CK!

BAH! I feel like a total jackass! Somehow I missed he was coming to Dragon*Con! *suddenly has something to do besides drink and pose for photos*

Oh god I love Brandon Bird! Which reminds me, I need to order more SVU Valentines for next year...

(And yay for the Venture calendar!)

in my mind J.G. Thirlwell's home must look just like the interior of the venture compound. accurate?

So which is the part of the compound that Orpheus rents?

Glad to hear that season 3 is shaping up so well. We're all really looking forward to that. And you'll be doing a Super Jail cameo? Nice. That was the only pilot I liked when they were aired a few months back.

Anyway, I've got a few questions that maybe you could not necessarily reply to (I know you're a busy man after all) but are you guys making these episodes in high definition? I know Cartoon Network is supposed to start airing in HD later this year and there was even a bump about it on Adult Swim recently, so just curious about that. And would you guys mind putting a little more effort into the commentaries for the season 3 dvd when the time comes? Like say... getting a second mic? As a fan that bought the second dvd set on day one I was pretty upset that you guys didn't care to put that much effort into them. The first thing I did when I got home was turn on the commentaries and they were just pretty disappointing. =(

P.S. I'm wearing my Juicy Couture track pants as I'm writing this. I know how much you guys looooooove those. Hahahaha... =P

I think it's unfair to say they didn't care about the commentaries. If they didn't care, why would they put them on every episode? I agree that they could have used a second mic, but I really enjoyed the palaver between Doc and Jackson, even if it was off-topic. Besides, if you want to know specific answers to questions about the show you can ask them here.

Brandon Bird is fantastic. "Lambertback" is on my desktop right now, but I think "No One Wants to Play Sega with Harrison Ford" is my all time favorite.
