¡Caliente!

For your viewing pleasure, courtesy of the internet and Quick Stop Entertainment, here is the short teaser promo for The Venture Bros. Season 2 DVD that Doc put together for our recent NY Comicon appearance.

And, crap! Last time I posted, I totally forgot to plug the podcast of an interview I did for Jesse Thorn's The Sound of Young America radio programme. Sorry, Jesse. Sorry, me.

PRODUCTION UPDATE: WEEK -2
We began pre-pre-production a week ago in the spacious new Chelsea headquarters of World Leaders Entertainment. The in-house staff of The Venture Bros. presently consists of me, Stephen DeStefano (Storyboard/Character & Prop Design Supervisor), George Fort (Background Design Supervisor), Liz Artinian (Color Supervisor) and Rachel Simon (producer). Basically we spent the last week trying to figure out or remember what our jobs are and where the hell Rachel packed everything. Our goal over the next couple of weeks before full production starts is to tweak some of the stock character and background models for the show till they become even more lovely and Korea-proof. I finished my first script over a week ago and am at various stages of development of three others. Doc's almost done with his first one and is also chipping away at a couple more. None of them are our season premier. We probably won't get to that script till next month.

But more importantly, I have painted my and Stephen's shared office a lovely shade of Benjamin Moore satin finish "Caliente". A zebra print area rug soon followed. Ikea bookcases, a TV and a new iMac are expected any day now.

We Love You,

JP

Well, I'll be damned if I don't want to rush over to Amazon and place my pre-order for the Season 2 DVD after viewing that trailer...
Yay for VB being in pre-production and interior design, two of my favorite things!( Satin finish is an excellent choice ,lovely sheen and scrubbable to boot!)

I should have gone "eggshell," to be perfectly honest. The "satin" was a bit glossier than expected.

Amazing, how long has DeStefano been involved in the show? He's one of my favorite all-time comics creators, but I don't recall catching his name in the credits before ...

Stephen was one of our main storyboard artists on Season 1, but was working elsewhere when we made Season 2.

btw- your college education sounds like mine. Community College with a follow up with a university and then never finishing.
Must be an art student thing to never finish college.

Quick question- what's going on with the old studio of Astrobase? Are you guys keeping it in addition to the new studio?
jacksonpublick[info]jacksonpublick on March 26th, 2007 01:58 pm (UTC)
AstroBase Go! has always been a separate facility from World Leaders/Noodlesoup Entertainment, and so the Base remains.

Thanks again for the spiffy trailer.

It might have been mentioned someplace and I just have my head up my ass (which is where I like to keep it)

But - right on apples main apge (http://www.apple.com) is an add for Apple TV and in the background in the top row - 5 items from the left is a Venture Bros logo.

Put a smile on my face :) I think you are considered as having "made it" when you share advertising space with Toy Story, Lost and Dora the Explorer.

Cheers lads!

Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Men
Sounds lovely!
Does it seem any easier this time around? Last time at this point of pre-pre-production had you already finished your first script and such? Or do you set your standards even higher each time and so the pressure just never lets up?

Does it help or hinder having two seasons of characters, locations and events to both base your new season(s) on and be confined by them?

Looking forward to those lovely background and pencil drawings.
BTW: Will you be offering full-poster versions (or new artwork) for print through Cartoon Network or your own licensing? I love your pencil and ink work. I'd love to see more of it.

Re: Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Men
I'm hoping it will be easier this time around because Season 2 was an absolute nightmare almost from day one, as compared to Season 1, which was just really really hard. We got a little bit of a budget increase this season, so we've added a few staff members in some key positions that should both improve the quality of the show and take a bit of the pressure off me personally. On Season 1 we started production with 2 scripts finished. We fell behind by episode 8 and started turning in scripts mere seconds before they had to be designed (and in one or two cases, a few days after) so on Season 2 we were determined to have 4 scripts finished before the start of production to avoid that. We pulled it off, but the animation production ended up being so time and energy consuming that we fell behind on scripts even sooner than we had on the previous season. This time around, we're again shooting to have 4 scripts finished by commencement of production, but since April 9th is looming and we only have one so far, I'm getting a little nervous. It might be more like 3. I'm not too worried because, unlike previous seasons when Doc and I were each maybe one story ahead of whatever script we were writing, we've already collected a good 8 or 9 solid episode ideas. So the ideas are flowing, it's just a matter of writing them down now!

To answer your other question, I find two seasons of preexisting material and continuity to be more of a help than a hindrance--the characters' personalities are so established they almost write themselves, and discovering and illuminating the heretofore undocumented corners of their lives and psyches is a fun challenge.

As for your final question, [adultswim] tells me they may be offering poster prints of the DVD art from both seasons' DVD packaging in the near future, and I will definitely be offering some of my original individual wash drawings from the Season 2 DVD cover on eBay between now and the DVD's release date.

Looking forward to getting the second season set and being the envy of my friends.

I now quote soley from Venture Brothers and Harvey Birdman. Cartoon Network / Adult Swim is amazing. Yours is one of the two best series ever to come from twisted inspired minds.
